How much hand luggage can I take with me at Aeroflot?

Economy Class & Comfort Class: Aeroflot allows a large piece of hand luggage with the maximum dimensions of 55 x 40 x 25 cm (max. 10 kg) as well as a personal item such as a handbag or laptop bag (sum of the three dimensions of the personal item may not exceed 80 cm, weight limit = 5 kilograms).

Business Class: Aeroflot allows a large piece of hand luggage with the maximum dimensions of 55 x 40 x 25 cm (max. 15 kg) as well as a personal item such as a handbag or laptop bag (sum of the three dimensions of the personal item may not exceed 80 cm, upper weight limit = 5 kilograms).

Aeroflot Hand Luggage Allowance

Aeroflot: Hand luggage allowance for babies & (small) children

Babies aged 0-2 years are generally not entitled to their own carry-on baggage at Aeroflot. This is mainly due to the fact that babies usually travel on the accompanying person’s lap.

However, you may also be able to to book a seat for your baby (0-2 years old) (of course you have to pay and in this case a child seat must be installed on the seat). You must bring this child seat with you (the seat is NOT provided by the airline) and in this case babies aged 0-2 years are also entitled to their own hand luggage (= free hand luggage allowance identical to that for adult passengers).

You can also bring the following for babies (at no extra charge):

  • a device for carrying the baby (child seat)
  • a foldable pram (max. dimensions 42 x 50 x 20 cm)
  • Baby food (for babies aged 0-2 years) for consumption by a child during flight

Infants 2 years and older have the same right to hand luggage as adults at Aeroflot.

Liquids in hand luggage at Aeroflot

Liquids are only allowed in very limited quantities in Aeroflot hand luggage. As always, the following rules apply:

  • Liquids (including aerosols, pastes and gels) must all be stowed in a transparent plastic bag
  • This plastic bag must also be resealable
  • The volume of the plastic bag must not exceed one litre
  • Each liquid container may have a maximum capacity of 100 ml (Attention: The capacity of the container is decisive, not the current filling level!)
  • The plastic bag must not be larger than 20 x 20 cm
  • Only one plastic bag per passenger is allowed
  • The plastic bag must be shown separately at the security checkpoint

Where you can get such a plastic bag from and what else there is to know about it, please see our article: Bag of Liquids for liquids in hand luggage

Aeroflot: Exceptional rule for liquid baby food and liquid medication in hand luggage

For liquid baby food and liquid medication, the 100 ml rule for liquids in hand luggage is not applicable at Aeroflot (and also at all other airlines). Passengers may also bring these products into the cabin in containers containing more than 100 ml per container, but only if they urgently need them during the flight.

If you are dependent on a liquid medicine during the flight, which is in a container with a capacity of more than 100 ml, then this is not a problem in itself.

However, for such liquid medicines (in containers >100 ml) you must be able to present a medical certificate at the security checkpoint so that you can benefit from this exception rule. For further practical information, please refer to our article: Syringes in hand luggage

Aeroflot: Food in hand luggage

In principle, food is allowed in Aeroflot hand luggage. As a rule, food does not cause any problems at the security checkpoint. It is important to understand that security checks are not carried out by the airlines themselves, but by airport personnel. And the airport staff at the security check usually has no problem with food as long as it is not liquid food.

If the food is liquid, the rule for liquids in hand luggage applies.

If it is solid food, then in most cases neither the airline, nor the personnel at the security check has a problem with it. However, customs can then later cause problems with certain foodstuffs, because not all foodstuffs may simply be imported into a country in the luggage.

The import of certain foodstuffs is completely forbidden in most countries. All milk and meat products usually fall into this category.

However, as long as you consume your food on board, you are usually on the safe side.

Nevertheless, you are not allowed to consume your own alcohol on board. Not even if you bought it in a duty-free shop. You can, however, eat chips, sandwiches or even meat snacks that you have brought with you in your hand luggage during the flight.

Musical instruments on board with Aeroflot

How is the topic of musical instruments handled as hand luggage by the Russian airline Aeroflot? Here is an overview of the most important rules and regulations:

A musical instrument can be carried as a regular piece of hand luggage if its length, width and depth together do not exceed 135 cm.

A guitar with a total dimension of more than 135 cm may still be carried as hand luggage, but only if you have obtained permission from Aeroflot at least 36 hours before departure. Such a permit can be obtained from Aeroflots Contact Center, Aeroflot’s sales office or an official representative of the company.

Aeroflot’s rules for cabin musical instruments are quite generous. With many airlines, larger musical instruments such as guitars can either not be transported at all or only on an extra seat. Transporting musical instruments to an additional seat is usually a very good option, but it is also expensive, as you usually pay the same price for the additional seat as for your own seat!

As far as the transport of musical instruments in general is concerned, you should also inform yourself thoroughly about the facts at first glance, because here, too, some (nasty) surprises may be waiting for you if you have not already dealt extensively with the subject before departure. So here are 9 useful tips on the subject of musical instruments on air travel.

Aeroflot: Pets in cabin

As far as the transport of animals in airplanes is concerned, this situation is handled completely differently depending on the airline. Some airlines, especially low-cost airlines like easyJet & Ryanair, do not transport animals at all, neither in the cabin nor in the cargo hold (with the exception of guide dogs in the cabin).

Other airlines only carry dogs and cats.

So what about Aeroflot’s transport of (domestic) animals?

Aeroflot proves to be a rather animal-friendly airline, because the Russian airlines can transport the following animals:

  • Dogs
  • Cats
  • Birds
  • Polecats (if it is a domesticated pet)
  • Ferrets (if they are tamed pets)
  • Meerkats (if they are tamed pets)
  • Desert foxes (if they are tamed pets)
  • Loris (if it is a tamed pet)
  • Dwarf hedgehog (if it is a tamed pet)
  • Dwarf rabbits (if they are tamed pets)
  • Marmoset monkey (if it is a tamed pet)

Important information: If you are travelling with Aeroflot and wish to transport an animal, you must inform Aeroflot at least 36 hours before departure (by telephone via the contact centre or when booking the flight ticket).

The transport of animals in the cabin is only possible if the animal weighs less than 8 kilograms including the transport container. If the animal and its container weigh more, it must be transported in the cargo compartment of the aircraft.

For dogs & cats (possibly also for other animals), you must have a pet passport. In addition, these animals must be identified by a microchip (in certain cases, identification by tattoo may also be permitted).

More information on this subject and on the subject of suitable transport containers for air travel can be found here directly at Aeroflot.

Aeroflot: Please note for flights to the US

If you fly with Aeroflot to the US, you must comply with the Powder Rule. This rule was introduced in 2018 and limits the amount of powder you can carry in your hand luggage (without additional screening). The following is a brief overview of the provisions of this new powder rule:

  • Powders >350 ml must be presented separately at the security checkpoint at the airport. So take the powder out of your hand luggage and place it separately in one of the containers provided by security personnel.
  • Powder containers over 350 ml (equivalent to 12 ounces) are subjected to additional screening at the security checkpoint.
  • It is better to transport powders over 350 ml in your checked baggage from the very beginning; this way you save time and trouble at the security check and make sure that there are no delays during the check.

But wait: What is all powder about the security check? Here are a few examples:

Aeroflot: Please note for flights from the US

If you’re flying with Aeroflot from America, please don’t forget to check with the American Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to find out about the rules that apply to baggage (both hand and checked baggage).

In many ways, the rules for baggage in the US are identical to the rules we know from Europe. But not always. Therefore, it can certainly not be wrong to take a quick look at the current regulations according to the TSA.

As far as US travel in general is concerned, I have already documented the most important regulations for you in an article entitled (Hand)Baggage Rules USA 2019. It’s better to take a quick look at it now than to experience bad surprises later…isn’t it?

Experience with hand luggage at Aeroflot

Personally, I have never flown Aeroflot before, but on the internet you find various testimonials from people who have already flown with Aeroflot.

As for hand luggage at Aeroflot, I was able to find several testimonials on Tripadvisor from people who (at check-in) came across strict hand luggage checks. From strict hand luggage checks in baggage sizers provided by the airlines at check-in and/or at the gate, to tape-measure checks.

Some passengers were even refused hand luggage even though it was only 1-2 centimetres too large. So goodwill doesn’t seem to be a big issue at Aeroflot.

As far as checked baggage is concerned, the situation seems to be even more dramatic, as various passengers report that their baggage was either lost or arrived at its destination with a long delay. The sheer number of people and experience reports that tell about such events at Aeroflot makes you quite suspicious.

If you are flying with checked baggage, you should think twice about whether Aeroflot is the right choice.

If you only fly with hand luggage, you should make sure that you keep the dimensions and the maximum weight as specified by Aeroflot to 100%.

Related Questions

What is the maximum weight of hand luggage at Aeroflot?

The large piece of hand luggage at Aeroflot can usually weigh 10 kilograms. In the business class, however, the large piece of hand baggage may weigh 15 kg. The small piece of hand luggage (personal item) must not weigh more than 5 kilograms, regardless of the class of travel.

Are sweets allowed in hand luggage and on Aeroflot flights in general?

Sweets are usually no problem for Aeroflot in hand luggage. You may also consume sweets you have brought with you on board. If the sweets are in liquid form, you must, however, comply with the rules for liquids in hand luggage.

Can I also take a handbag on board as hand luggage at Aeroflot?

Yes, you can also take a personal item such as a handbag or laptop bag with you in the cabin of Aeroflot, as is common practice with most airlines, in addition to the large piece of hand luggage. Please note that this personal item must not weigh more than 5 kilograms at Aeroflot and that the sum of the three dimensions must not exceed 80 cm.

How many pieces of hand luggage can I take with me on my journey with Aeroflot?

Aeroflot allows you to bring on board two pieces of hand baggage in all fares: a large piece of hand baggage and a so-called personal item (handbag, laptop bag or briefcase). This applies to all fares. Some airlines allow you to bring two large items of hand luggage on board in business class. With Aeroflot, however, this is not the case. In addition to this free hand luggage allowance, you may also be allowed to bring an accessory on board. Such an accessory can be an umbrella, a coat or crutches.

Can I take a laptop with me to the Aeroflot cabin in addition to my hand luggage?

Yes, laptops fall into the category “Personal items” like handbags. Most airlines, including Aeroflot, allow one large piece of hand luggage plus one such personal item. For example, you can take a carry-on baggage trolley and a laptop with you in the cabin. As a rule, only one such personal item is allowed; accordingly, in theory you cannot take a trolley, a laptop (in a laptop bag) and a handbag with you. In practice, however, this is often tolerated. However, if you want to be on the safe side, you should only bring two pieces of hand baggage (a large piece of hand baggage and a personal item) as part of your hand baggage allowance.

Can I bring a Powerbank with me in my hand luggage at Aeroflot?

Can I bring a razor in my hand luggage on flights with Aeroflot?

At Aeroflot you may bring an electric shaver in your hand luggage. The same applies to epilators and other types of electric shavers. What is prohibited in Aeroflot’s (and all other airlines’) hand luggage are classic wet razors with exposed blades. Disposable razors with blades behind bars are allowed in hand luggage. Razor blades as individual parts are strictly forbidden in hand luggage, as they are classified as a potential weapon at security checkpoints (just like classic wet razors).

Can I bring medication in my hand luggage on flights with Aeroflot?

Tablets are safe on Aeroflot flights in hand luggage. As a rule, you do not need a prescription or medical certificate for them, even if they are prescription-only. However, if you want to bring liquid medication that comes in containers larger than 100 ml, you may need to present a medical certificate at the security checkpoint in order to make use of the exception rule for liquids in hand luggage. Of course, in general you must also make sure that you only carry medicines that are legal in the countries you are travelling to. The law can vary considerably from country to country in this respect.
