Glue in Hand Luggage

Glue in Hand Luggage

Can I bring glue in my hand luggage?

Yes, in Europe (EU) glue is generally allowed in hand luggage, but only if it is NOT highly flammable glue. For all glues such as glue sticks, wood glues, white glues, etc., the regulations for liquids in hand luggage in accordance with EU regulations must also be observed. Your glue must not hold more than 100 ml and must be stowed in the bag for liquids in order to be transported in hand luggage.

How do I know if my glue is (highly) flammable?

There is a danger symbol for “flammability”. Look on your glue to see if you can find one and also read the text on the glue. If you find any indications that the glue is highly flammable, you should refrain from transporting it in your hand luggage.

Even if you do not find such a symbol on the glue, it may be that the glue is classified as a dangerous object by security personnel (due to this property) and confiscated at the security checkpoint. In the end, security personnel always have the last word at the security checkpoint.

Is glue allowed in hand luggage in the US?

Regarding hand luggage regulations in the USA, it is usually relatively easy to find out what is allowed and what is not through the American Transportation Security Administration (TSA) website.

Especially the useful table with items from A to Z “What can I bring” gives you a good and quick overview of what’s going on in hand luggage (and also checked luggage) in the USA!

As far as glue is concerned, however, you will search in vain on the TSA website. That’s why the guru asked the TSA if glue is allowed on board in the hand luggage or not.

The TSA’s answer was:

When packed in a carry-on bag, nonflammable glue must be 3.4 ounces or less. The container must fit comfortably in a single, quart-sized resealable bag containing your other travel-sized liquid items. Larger containers are allowed in checked bags. For more guidance from the Federal Aviation Administration, please visit: http://bit.ly/2QJdh36 TSA

So, in the US, only nonflammable glue is allowed in hand luggage and you need to pack it in the bag of liquids.
