Carry-on Baggage Size/Weight Allowance | All Major Airlines

We created the ultimate check list for carry-on baggage allowance (size, weight, personal items) for all airlines worldwide! Please note that the list contains all the relevant information for Economy customers only.  Most of us fly Economy, so we felt that this list makes the most sense. Moreover, to put the info together for Economy, First and Business class customers in terms of size/weight/item allowance for all Airlines worldwide would have been an extremely time-consuming task and that list would be not user-friendly at all, as it would just contain too much data to digest. So, if you are flying Business Class or First Class or some other special Class, please consult other resources. If you booked a regular economy class ticket that list will most certainly provide all the info you need in terms of carry-on baggage for your airline. Before we introduce that list, let us have a look at the  general rules in terms of carry-on baggage allowance:

Generally, each customer can bring at least the following things on board:

1 cabin-bag  (such as a suitcase or a back pack or a folding garment bag*)

1 personal item (such as handbag or a laptop bag)

One (multiple) accessories (such as un umbrella, reading material for the flight)

The amount of cabin-bags you can bring on board, often depends on the fare/ticket you’ve got. Most of the time you can bring at least one cabin-bag on board regardless of the fare/ticket you’ve got. More expensive fares/tickets often allow you to bring additional hand luggage onboard. There is only a handful of airlines that will not allow economy customers to bring at least 1 regular carry-on bag on bord.

Some airlines have special rules for folding garment bags as regular hand luggage. In many cases the airline provides a different max. size for folding garment bags as regular hand luggage. That size is usually a little bit bigger than the max. size that is allowed for backpacks or suitcases as hand luggage. So if you want to bring a folding garment bag as hand luggage, please check the airline’s website first to make sure your garment bag is within the allowed max. size.

As for the personal items, the rule is that 1 personal item can usually be be brought onboard. In most cases this holds true for all tickets/fares. However, some airlines do not allow additional personal items on board (meaning that you would need to put those items in your regular carry-on baggage to get them onboard). Another important thing to note here is that some airlines have a combined weight limit for hand luggage . This means that the regular hand luggage combined with your personal item can not surpass a certain amount of weight. In other cases the personal item(s) weight is exclusive of the weight allowance for the regular hand luggage. (the list below will provide that info for you). Moreover, most airlines urge you that the personal item must be able to be stowed under the seat in front of you. And in this regard, airlines often provide a max. size for personal items as well. (If there is a max. size for the personal items, you will find that info in the list as well)

As for the accessories, they are usually allowed in addition to the personal item that you can bring with you. However, sometimes accessories and personal items are listed in the same list on the website of the Airline and in these cases it is often not clear whether you can bring just one item of that list or several ones. Often more than one item will be tolerated, eventhough the Airlines usually say on their website that only one such item is allowed.

As for traveling with infants, food and nappies required during the flight may usually be carried in addition to the accompanying adult’s carry-on baggage allowance (so they do not count as personal items in most cases). Certain airlines do list these items under personal items, though. If that is the case, you will find those items under “Personal items” in our list. (see below).

Carry-on Baggage Size/Weight Allowance | All Major Airlines

All the necessary info for Economy customers: Allowed size (in inches and cm), allowed weight in kgs and info about the allowance onboard of personal items (allowed/not allowed and if allowed a list of possible items).

Kilos in pounds (lb) : 5 kilos = 11.0231 lb, 6 kilos = 13.2277 lb, 7 kilos = 15.4324 lb, 8 kilos = 17.637 lb, 9 kilos = 19.8416 lb, 10 kilos = 22.0462 lb

The empty fields are empty for a purpose. Some Airlines only indicate the size in inches and others only in cms. So whenever an airline stated the size only in inches or cms on their website, this will be the case here as well. We did not convert the sizes by ourselves because of "rounding issues". Some airlines seem to round to the nearest whole numbers (either up or down), some others don't. If you want to convert from cm to inches or vice-versa, just go to google and look for some cm to inches converter online.
