The German airline Condor has been serving the most beautiful destinations in the world since 1956. The airline is a subsidiary of the British Thomas Cook Group. Condor flies to over 200 destinations, including Europe, America, Africa and Asia.

The holiday airline is constantly expanding its route network and since summer 2017 has also been flying to San Diego, New Orleans and Pittsburgh as new destinations in the United States.

But let us now move on to the essential, i.e. the essential matter for our purposes: The hand luggage allowance of Condor.

How much hand luggage can you take with you at Condor?

Condor offers a total of four fares:

  • ECONOMY LIGHT
  • ECONOMY CLASS
  • PREMIUM CLASS
  • BUSINESS CLASS

The amount of hand luggage you can take on board depends on the fare you choose. Here is a precise overview of the free hand baggage allowance depending on the fare.

ECONOMY LIGHT
  • A large piece of hand luggage* with the maximum dimensions of 55 x 40 x 20 cm but ONLY if you are travelling in travel zones 3-5 (East Africa, Asia, Mexico, Caribbean, Central & South America, Namibia, South Africa, Indian Ocean, USA, Canada, Puerto Rico)
  • A small piece of hand luggage (also called a personal item), such as a laptop bag or a handbag with the max. dimensions of 40 x 30 x 10 cm
  • The combined maximum weight of the two pieces of hand luggage shall not exceed 8 kg.
  • An umbrella may be brought on board in addition to the large and small piece of hand luggage.

*ATTENTION: Since the end of April 2019, the Economy Light fare has only included one large piece of hand luggage in travel zones 3-5. On flights in travel zones 1-2 (Balearic Islands, Balkans, Bulgaria, Croatia, France, Germany, Italy, Spanish and Portuguese mainland, Iceland, Canary Islands, Cape Verde & Madeira, Cyprus, Malta, Greece & Turkey, Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, Gambia & United Arab Emirates) you are only entitled to a small piece of hand luggage in the Economy Light tariff!

Note: This information applies to short-haul flights as well as medium-haul and long-haul flights.

  • The combined maximum weight of the two pieces of hand luggage shall not exceed 10 kg.
  • An umbrella may be brought on board in addition to the large and small piece of hand luggage.

BUSINESS CLASS
  • Two large pieces of hand luggage, max. dimensions 55 x 40 x 20 cm

Note: The Business Class fare can only be booked on long-haul flights.

Can parents bring additional hand luggage for babies?

If you are travelling with a baby (age 0-2 years), some airlines will allow parents additional hand luggage, as babies themselves are often not entitled to hand luggage.

At Condor, babies aged 0-2 are not entitled to carry-on baggage.

As parents (responsible persons), however, you may also bring a diaper bag free of charge on board for your baby.

Also, you can bring a child seat on board free of charge, but only if you have booked a seat for your baby (full price for child 2-11 years to pay for it).

For infants aged 2 and over, Condor applies the same free hand luggage allowance as for adults. This is how most airlines handle it.

Excess baggage charges for hand baggage

If your hand baggage is too large or too heavy, it must be transported in the hold of the machine. In this case, you will have to pay excess baggage charges.

If the violation is only noticed at the gate, charges of up to 75 euros may apply.

Liquids in hand luggage at Condor

Restrictions for liquids in hand luggage are always the same in Europe (and in many other countries). The same applies to Condor. Because here, too, the same applies:

  • Liquids, gels, and aerosols must be transported in a bag for liquids.
  • Each container must have a maximum capacity of 100 ml.
  • The volume of the liquid bag must not exceed one litre.
  • The bag must be transparent and resealable
  • Only one such bag per person allowed

More important information about the liquid bag and information about the points of sale of these bags can be found in the article: Liquid Bags | Hand Luggage | Rules & Where to Purchase

Condor: Travelling with pets

Are you allowed to take your four-legged friend or your cuddly cat with you on the journey with Condor?

Yes, Condor carries both dogs and cats. Your pet may even be taken into the cabin as long as the following regulations are observed:

  • Your pet and transport container must not be larger than 55 x 40 x 20 cm (i.e. the same dimensions as for regular hand luggage).
  • Your pet must be in a closed transport container during the entire flight.
  • The transport box must be air-permeable, sealable and watertight.
  • Only one animal may be transported per transport box

Important notes: Animal transport must be registered at least 24 hours before departure. Condor also does not carry animals in the Business Class cabin.

Another very important thing to know is that your pet will need to have a pet passport for international pet travel.

Moreover, your pet will need to have a microchip implant.

The requirements vary from country to country, but the passport and the microchip are basic requirements.

Taking musical instruments into the cabin at Condor

On its official website, Condor offers hardly any information about the carriage of musical instruments. Most airlines provide an extra sub-page with extensive information on this topic. But not Condor.

On request in the Live Chat of Condor, I was told: “Unfortunately, musical instruments are not permitted in most cases, as the hand luggage dimensions of 55 x 40 x 20 must not be exceeded“. Condor is not the only airline that does this.

So if you want to take a musical instrument into the cabin which does not exceed 55 x 40 x 20, then this musical instrument is regarded as your regular carry-on baggage or must be stowed in the large carry-on baggage.

You cannot take a musical instrument with you in addition to your regular piece of hand luggage. In fact, this is not possible with any airline.

However, every airline handles the topic of “musical instruments aboard the aircraft” a little different. Some airlines don’t allow any instruments on board; others allow various instruments up to the size of a standard guitar and so on and so forth.

For larger musical instruments, most airlines offer transport in an additional seat. Condor, however, does not offer extra seats for musical instruments.

At Condor, however, musical instruments may also be carried in the cargo hold within the normal free baggage allowance (20 kg) or as excess baggage. However, you must register (let the airline know in advance) to take your luggage with you in the hold.

To ensure that the carriage of your musical instruments is a guaranteed success, I would like to refer you at this point to the article “9 Great Tips for carrying Musical Instruments on Airplanes“.

It is strongly recommended that you read this article, as unfortunately many things can go wrong when carrying musical instruments on airplanes.

Prohibited articles on board at Condor

Essentially, all airlines must observe the same basic rules with regard to “prohibited and dangerous articles”. A good overview of what is permitted in hand luggage and what is not can be found in the IATA table “Provisions for Dangerous Goods Carried by Passengers or Crew“.

However, airlines can define additional rules and restrictions.

At Condor, in particular, knives and scissors are not allowed in hand luggage. This is the case with most airlines, by the way. However, there are also airlines that allow knives and scissors, provided that the blade length does not exceed 6 cm.

In any case, I strongly advise you to carry knives and scissors in checked baggage, because carrying them in hand luggage is a “game with fire” and even if the airline has nothing against it in principle, it is possible that you get in trouble at the security checkpoint.

In addition, Condor prohibits the transportation of lighters when travelling to the USA. Condor writes on its website that lighters are forbidden in the USA, both in hand luggage and in checked luggage as well as on the body.

However, this is a little bit weird because the American Transportation Security Administration (TSA), which is responsible for these kinds of questions in the US, basically advocates the transport of lighters in hand luggage (transport on the body, only one piece). Here is the proof in case you don’t believe me.

Get in contact with Condor

Get in Contact with Condor

Together with Ryanair and easyJet, Condor is one of the few airlines to offer its customers a Live Chat Service. Use this channel to get in touch directly with Condor staff and get your questions answered quickly. Foto Credit: Tis Meyer / planepics.org

As always, we want to take a closer look at how you can best get in touch with the airline in case of doubt. It turned out that Condor can be reached via the following contact channels:

As far as Condor is concerned, I can highly recommend getting in contact with Condor via Live Chat. Unfortunately, the Condor Live Chat is only available in German. If you are lucky enough to speak German, then it is best to ask your questions via this channel. Why? Because usually, you get an answer very quickly like that.

If you only speak English, you can try the Live Chat for Thomas Cook Airlines (Condor belongs to the Thomas Cook Group, you remember, right?). The staff there is friendly and willing to help. But as Condor is only a “partner airline” of Thomas Cook Airlines, they might not be able to help out. But it’s worth a try.

Another good way to reach out to Condor is using Twitter. Twitter is actually my preferred “contact channel” for most airlines. Almost every airline has a Twitter account these days and most airlines do indeed answer questions there.

I asked easyJet, Air Europa, Eurowings, Ryanair, Flybe and many other airlines tons of questions on Twitter, you can believe me on that, I promise.
