Wizz Air: Hand luggage allowance for infants?

What is the hand luggage allowance for infants at Wizz Air?

Parents may bring an additional small piece of hand luggage (40 x 30 x 20 cm) free of charge for their baby (0-2 years).

Adults may also bring one foldable pram or one travel cot into the cabin per child.

For children under the age of 2, you may also bring baby food on board for the duration of the flight. For this baby food, the rule for liquids in hand luggage does not apply, i.e. for baby food that is needed during the flight, this rule does not have to be observed.

As far as children over two years of age are concerned, they have the same right to carry-on baggage at Wizz Air as adults (makes perfect sense, as from 2 years of age the child has to pay the full airfare at Wizz Air).

What applies to Wizz Air when it comes to liquids in hand luggage?

For liquids, the EU regulation for liquids in hand baggage applies at Wizz Air just as for any other European airline. Liquids may, therefore, only be carried in hand luggage on Wizz Air flights if they are in a container with a maximum capacity of 100 millilitres and if they have all been stowed in the bag for liquids.

The zip-top bag for liquids must not hold more than one litre and must also be transparent and resealable. The liquid containers themselves do not necessarily have to be transparent.

If you would like to bring larger quantities of water on board in your hand luggage, there are two ways to do this:

  • You simply buy water AFTER the security check
  • You bring an empty bottle through the security check and then fill it up. More information about this little “trick” can be found in our article: Empty drinking bottle in hand luggage

Musical instruments in (hand)luggage at Wizz Air

Musical instruments on board the plane, that’s not an easy topic. Every airline handles this issue a little differently. With most airlines, a musical instrument is usually only allowed on board if the musical instrument complies with the conventional regulations for hand luggage in terms of size and weight.

This is quite similar with Wizz Air, but it is important to note that you may only bring musical instruments (bigger than 40 x 30 x 20 cm) on board with Wizz Air if you have booked the Wizz Priority option.

By booking this option, you will be able to take a musical instrument with you instead of the regular large piece of hand luggage (trolley bag). If you bring a musical instrument on board as hand luggage, you are no longer entitled to an additional small piece of hand luggage.

The special thing about this is that Wizz Air allows musical instruments as hand luggage up to 80 x 40 x 23 cm and not only up to 50 x 40 x 23 cm (normal size for large hand luggage with Wizz Priority option). But be careful: This only applies if you have booked Wizz Priority.

Smaller musical instruments

Violin in the cabin take Wizz Air
At Wizz Air, you can bring a violin into the cabin. However, only if you have booked the Wizz Priority option.

The Hungarian low-cost airline Wizz Air further specifies that a musical instrument can be carried on board in an instrument case if the length does not exceed 80 cm and the other dimensions of the case are not more than 40 x 23 cm.

In this “category” Wizz Air lists the following musical instruments: violins, violas, transverse flutes, clarinets, trumpets, and ukuleles.

Medium-sized musical instruments

Larger instruments (such as a cello) that exceed the hand luggage regulations can be transported on an additional seat at Wizz Air. This extra seat must, of course, be paid for. Experience has shown that the costs for such seats are in the range of regular seats.

The booking for such a seat (EXST, also known as Extra Seat) can be made online. Wizz Air states that the first name “EXST” should be entered when booking such a seat and the surname the passenger’s surname.

Large musical instruments

Large musical instruments such as a harp or a double bass must be checked in at Wizz Air with a Limited Release marking as checked baggage and cannot be transported in the cabin, but only in the hold. The limitation of liability marking means that Wizz Air is not liable in the event of damage to your instrument. So if your instrument is damaged or even broken during transport, you must pay for the damage yourself.

Transporting musical instruments by plane is something that needs to be well planned. To ensure that everything runs smoothly during transport, you should take a look at these 9 valuable tips.

Wizz Air: Travelling with animals

Wizz Air does not transport animals except guide dogs for the blind. ESAN dogs are not allowed on Wizz Air flights.

Many low-cost airlines do not carry animals. However, guide dogs for the blind are allowed with all airlines, which is probably regulated by law. For example, Ryanair and easyJet can only carry assistance dogs.

Wizz Air excess baggage: Too large/heavy hand baggage?

You have booked the Wizz Basic tariff without Wizz Priority…

If you are travelling on Wizz Air and your hand baggage exceeds the maximum permitted dimensions of 40 x 30 x 20 cm or exceeds the maximum weight of 10 kg, an excess baggage charge will apply. This excess baggage charge is usually 25 Euro.

If this piece of hand baggage does not exceed the dimensions 55 x 40 x 23, you may take it on board after paying the excess baggage charge, provided that there is still enough space in the baggage compartments on board. If this is not the case, then this piece of baggage must be transported in the hold of the aircraft.

You have booked the Wizz Basic Fare WITH Wizz Priority…

If your hand baggage exceeds 55 x 40 x 23 cm or exceeds the maximum weight of 10 kilograms, an excess baggage charge of 60 euros will apply at the gate.

In this case, the oversized/heavy piece of hand baggage must be transported in the hold of the aircraft.

Is it allowed to bring food in your hand luggage at Wizz Air?

As a matter of principle, Wizz Air, like all other European airlines, allows you to take food with you in your hand luggage and you will not encounter any problems during security checks. However, there is a lot to consider in this context:

If you bring food in liquid form, then the rules for liquids in hand luggage must be observed. These rules also apply to Nutella, sausage spread and jam, for example!

For some foods, especially milk and meat products, there are strict import regulations and sometimes also bans. Therefore, it is essential that you observe the import regulations of the respective destination country.

Wizz Air Contact

Wizz Air offers you the following contact channels:

Unfortunately, Wizz Air does not offer a Live Chat function. At the moment only the low-cost airlines easyJet and Ryanair, as well as Condor, offer a live chat function.

As in most cases, we advise you to contact Wizz Air via Twitter. Wizz Air can be reached relatively quickly via Twitter and usually responds competently and reliably.

Related Questions

Has Wizz Air changed the size of the allowed carry-on baggage?

Yes, Wizz Air used to allow you to bring a large piece of hand luggage (trolley, backpack) and a small piece of hand luggage (handbag or laptop bag) on board at Basic tariff. Now you can only bring a small piece of hand baggage on board in the standard tariff, and only those who have booked the Wizz Priority option can still take a large piece of hand baggage into the cabin. Ryanair (and Laudamotion) have also introduced a similar change to hand baggage regulations in the recent past.

Is it allowed to carry a handbag in addition to your hand luggage at Wizz Air?

If you fly at the basic rate, the answer is no. Because in the basic tariff you are only entitled to a small piece of hand luggage with a maximum size of 40 x 30 x 20 cm. This small piece of hand luggage may, of course, be a handbag, but you can NOT bring it with you in addition to another piece of hand luggage unless you have booked the Wizz Priority option. Then you can bring a hand luggage trolley or a backpack as a large piece of hand luggage and take a handbag or laptop bag with you as a small piece of hand luggage.

How many millilitres of liquid can I carry in my hand luggage at Wizz Air?

Based on the EU Regulation No. 185/2010 of the Commission, Wizz Air only allows you to carry liquids in containers that do not exceed 100 ml. All of these liquids must be stored in the liquid bag, which must not exceed 1 litre (1000 ml). They may, therefore, carry a maximum of 100 ml per container and a maximum of 1000 ml in hand luggage.

Can the Wizz Air Personal cool my medicines on board?

You are responsible for the cooling of medication. The cabin crew will not be able to help you on board. With other airlines, however, the situation is more accommodating, and some airlines do allow the flight crew to cool medication during the flight. This is possible, for example, with SWISS (on request).

Medicines such as insulin can be cooled using special cooling bags, such as the Frio Insulin Wallet. The advantage is that these bags do not require batteries, electricity or a special cooling element. Extremely practical!

Can I bring a deodorant in my hand luggage on board at Wizz Air?

Deodorants are permitted in hand luggage, but are subject to the rules for liquids, as these also include gels, creams, and aerosols. Your deodorant (belongs to the category of aerosols) may, therefore, be carried in hand luggage if the capacity of the deodorant does not exceed 100 ml and the deodorant has been placed in the bag for liquids. In addition, the deodorant must not be “highly flammable”. Deo sticks are a good alternative to the classic spray deodorant. These can be easily transported in hand luggage.

Can I have coffee in my hand luggage on Wizz Air flights?

Coffee is generally allowed in hand luggage. This is also the case with Wizz Air. If the coffee is liquid, however, the rules for liquids in hand luggage must be observed. You are therefore only allowed to bring small quantities of liquid coffee through the security check (containers with a maximum of 100 ml, securely stowed in the bag for liquids). If it is powdered coffee, you must also observe the powder rule when travelling to the USA. There are no special restrictions for solid coffee such as coffee capsules.

How much liquid does Wizz Air allow in checked baggage?

Basically, the amount of liquid you can carry in checked baggage is not limited. However, there is one exception for aerosols. If you take aerosols such as a hairspray with you in your checked baggage, then the rule applies that you may bring a maximum of 2 litres and that each individual container may hold a maximum of 500 ml. Further information can be found in our article: Liquids in checked baggage

How much is Wizz Priority?

Wizz Priority costs between 5 and 30 Euros if you book the option online through the Wizz Air call centre. If you book the service at the airport, the price is 20 Euros.

How do I know if I have booked Wizz Priority or not?

You will see on your boarding pass whether you have Wizz Priority or not. On your boarding pass, you will recognise the service by the “PRIORITY” sign. On the mobile boarding pass (mobile phone!) you can identify the service by the abbreviation “PRB” or “PASS”.

Is there a maximum weight for the small piece of hand luggage at Wizz Air?

Yes, the small piece of hand baggage may not weigh more than 10 kilograms.

What does the name Wizz Air actually mean?

Good question. The origin of the name doesn’t seem that clear. “Wizz” could be an allusion to Wizard. More obvious is the relationship with the verb “to whiz”, which means as much as hissing through the air. But we couldn’t find an official statement about the name of the airline anywhere (yet).
